“Summer Fever” at PREISS FINE ARTS feels like the kind of exhibition that arrives exactly when it should. After months of grey skies and routine, there is something refreshing about surrounding yourself with photographs that celebrate freedom, glamour, spontaneity and pure visual pleasure. This exhibition was conceived as an invitation into that atmosphere — a world suspended somewhere between memory, fantasy and desire.

While installing the show, I kept thinking about how differently each artist interprets summer. For some, it becomes cinematic and mysterious; for others, playful and unapologetically loud. David Drebin captures those quiet moments of longing and escape with his dreamlike landscapes and nocturnal scenes, while Tony Kelly embraces colour, excess and wit with images that feel almost impossible to look away from. Ellen von Unwerth brings her unmistakable energy to the exhibition — confident, rebellious and full of life.

One of the pleasures of curating “Summer Fever” was allowing these different visual languages to exist together in the same space. A glamorous poolside scene suddenly sits opposite a deeply atmospheric seascape. A bold fashion portrait leads into an intimate black-and-white moment. The exhibition moves constantly between elegance and humour, nostalgia and fantasy, softness and decadence. That tension is what gives the show its pulse.

Several iconic works are presented alongside rarely seen pieces and new arrivals, creating unexpected dialogues throughout the gallery. Photographs by Albert Watson, Rankin, Michel Comte, Sante D’Orazio and David Yarrow add further layers to the exhibition, each contributing their own interpretation of beauty, escapism and contemporary mythology.
There is also something deeply emotional about summer imagery itself. Certain photographs instantly transport us — to a specific song, a journey, a fleeting romance, or simply the feeling of warm air late at night. Great photography has the power to trigger memory almost subconsciously, and many of the works in this exhibition carry exactly that kind of emotional charge.
