Behind the Scenes: The Curation of FALLing into Focus

As “FALLing into Focus” already captivates our first visitors, we’re excited to offer a deeper look into the curatorial process behind this autumnal celebration of photography. Our exhibition explores the intricate relationship between human form, nature, and art through a carefully curated collection.
We’ve created compelling dialogues between different photographic styles and subjects. Albert Watson’s iconic image of Mick Jagger with a leopard juxtaposed against David Yarrow’s intense wildlife portraits invites contemplation on our complex relationship with nature, from glamorization to reverence.

Contrast and Conversation

Yarrow’s striking black-and-white images serve as a narrative thread, mirroring autumn’s journey from vibrant energy to quiet contemplation. Ellen von Unwerth’s provocative compositions offer a playful counterpoint to somber wildlife images, challenging viewers to see the everyday anew.
We’ve mindfully created visual ‘conversations’ between pieces. Massimo Listri’s opulent theater interiors contrast beautifully with Nigel Parry’s abstract landscapes, reflecting different approaches to capturing beauty. Albert Watson’s op-art-inspired works add visual complexity, focusing on pattern and form over representation.

Transition

As curators, our goal has been to create an experience that evolves as visitors move through the space. The exhibition begins with bold, attention-grabbing pieces that slowly give way to more contemplative works, mirroring the gradual shift from summer’s vibrancy to autumn’s introspection and lastly, Tony Kelly’s Pieces of High Heels and Snowy Mountains look towards the Wintertime in anticipation.

We invite our visitors to engage deeply with each piece, considering not just the individual photographs, but how they interact with and enhance each other. “FALLing into Focus” is more than a collection of images – it’s a carefully orchestrated visual symphony that celebrates the multifaceted nature of contemporary photography.

“FALLing into Focus” is a visual symphony celebrating contemporary photography’s diversity. As autumn continues to unfold outside our gallery walls, we invite you to engage deeply with each piece and their interactions, hoping this expanded exhibition will inspire you to see the season – and the art of photography – in new and exciting ways. We look forward to sharing this enriched experience with you and hearing your perspectives on this deepened exploration of fall through the lens of contemporary photography.
